Polishing Writing on Parliament, Government, and Locations

Parliament and government

● Use capitals for particular buildings even if the name is not strictly accurate, For example, Home Affairs.
● Capitalise departments as they are known: Department of Sports and Recreation, Department of Public Enterprises.
● Never be lazy and abbreviate to “Dept”.
The full name of political parties is upper case:
● Democratic Alliance
● Economic Freedom Fighters
● African National Congress

Note that some parties (most in South Africa) do not have a party as part of their names, so this should therefore be lowercase.
Parliament is always capitalised at the national level. As is the National Assembly. But parliamentary is always lowercase. As are local governments and departments.
Leader of the Opposition and Speaker of the National Assembly are capitalised when they precede the named person.

Provinces, cities, places

Provinces, river, state, city
Lowercase when not strictly part of the name. In South Africa, NO province has the word “province”  attached to its official name. Thus, never capitalise it. If uncertain about overseas – Google it. General compass directions should be in lowercase
Example: The warm front is moving east.
Capitalise the full names of hospitals, hotels, churches and airports (Chris Hani Baragwanath  Hospital, Mount Nelson Hotel, St Mary’s Church, OR Tambo International Airport).
For police stations, capitalise only the place name: Rosebank police station.
